Frequently Asked Questions

General

In the fall of 2004 a small circle of people decided it was time to stop talking about Cleveland’s problems and start investing in solutions. They gathered together friends and neighbors to begin building a new giving circle and the Cleveland Colectivo was born.

Strengthening our community through collective investments in innovative projects.

Inspired by the traditional practice of immigrant neighbors who invested in each other’s businesses in order to build their own communities, the Cleveland Colectivo is a group of likeminded friends, neighbors and colleagues who have joined together for the purpose of collective giving. We pool our funds and share our energy to invest it back into projects that we see as worthwhile and exciting in the city Cleveland and/or innerring suburbs.

Seeking Funds

Fifty-seven grants, totaling over $116,000 have been distributed through nine individual funding cycles.

The grants are awarded through a consensus model. Over the course of the Pitch for Change, review of proposals and interviews with finalists for funding, the Cleveland Colectivo members determine who will be funded and at what amount.

Our grants range in size from $500-$5000, with an average grant size of around $2,000. Grants are made based on the strength of the idea, the impact our funds have to carry the idea forward and the amount of money the Cleveland Colectivo has available to distribute.

We gather initial ideas at our Pitch for Change event which usually occurs in lateFebruary. After this event, we narrow down a field of finalists (usually 1215) that are invited to complete a full proposal and participate in the interview process in the spring. Visit our website for details and dates in the late fall or early winter.

The Cleveland Colectivo has volunteer and giving members. The difference between the two types of members is that giving members have a vote in the final decision making process for awarding the funds. Non-giving members may participate in all other aspects of the decisionmaking process. We meet quarterly and meetings include discussing ideas, learning about area initiatives and organizations, and networking with our growing circle of members. Anyone is welcome to join our meetings, but we restrict voting on final decisions for awarding funds to full paying members.
